"Postcard #7: Songs from the Dust" è l'ultima cartolina che Julia Kotowski ci spedisce dai suoi viaggi reali e da quelli interni alla propria anima. Avventura iniziata nel Settembre 2012 da Hiddensee, isola tedesca sul Mar Baltico e proseguita successivamente ad Instanbul, Colonia, Berlino, Palm Springs e terminata ora nel deserto di Slab City, famoso accampamento nel sud-est California dove numerose persone vanno a ritrovare pace e ossigeno lontano dalla rumorosa civiltà. Due mesi e mezzo trascorsi a stretto contatto con la natura, tra scorpioni, albe, tramonti e fantastici panorami in cui la musicista berlinese ha registrato queste ultime cinque tracce intermezzate da brevi field recordings. Una chitarra acustica, rumori ambientali, voci a comparsa e l'ennesima escursione tra le oscurità della propria anima. Tutto rigorosamente en plein air.

La musica di entertainment for the braindead a me provoca un benessere interiore. E non posso fare a meno di parlarne. Le voglio bene anche se non la conosco. Incantato dai fragili racconti che si muovono sinuosi sulla sua carezzevole voce. Ammaliato dallo stile così artistico-freak che si culla all'interno di mobili bolle di semplicità. Una ragazza che emana arte, circondata dai suoi innumerevoli strumenti, dalle sue forbici e matite. Fogli che svolazzano tra caffè fumanti in grandi tazze. Scure gocce che si uniscono ai disegni, completandoli. Vedo in entertainment for the braindead un animo primitivo che lotta ogni giorno per non dimenticare di esser tale. "Songs for the Sleepless" è la quinta cartolina di un suggestivo viaggio nel mondo di Julia.

"Cologne. A room. Over time I collected quite a bunch of instruments. There are strings to be plucked and wooden sticks to blow air into, things to be hit and things to be shaken, millions of ways to set some kind of material into motion, to make another resonate with sound. If people ask me which was the first one I picked up, I tell them it was the recorder. But actually, if I want to be precise, there was another one before. In fact, the first cords I ever made vibrate were right in my throat, the first body I made resonate my own. Before I could even think of ways to hold or play another instrument, I had already discovered I was equipped with one: a voice. It still took a long time to get to know it and befriend with it. You have to go through the unsettling, dissociating experience of hearing your recorded voice for the first time, and believe me, you won‘t like it. You have to face its flaws and maybe learn to use turn them into benefits. Finally, at a time when my guitar would feel wrong in my hands and the strings of my banjo were only alienating, I sat down in a corner of my bed, stripped of all musical protheses, and decided to finally attempt to make as much use of my one very own instrument as possible. This is the result of that experiment. Cologne 2010 - Berlin 2012" (E.F.T.B.)

Arriva il terzo capitolo della collezione postcard ideata da Entertainment for the Braindead e dedicata a diversi luoghi dell’Europa visitati dalla musicista di Berlino. Come in ogni precedente release è presente una caratteristica particolare che la contraddistingue. In questo caso la presenza quasi unica della sua voce trasporta in un atmosfera semi religiosa. Melodie che sono preghiere cantate in stazioni deserte di paesi del nord. Sovrapposizioni vocali magistralmente calibrate su basi electro-voice. Julia (E.F.T.B.) sa inventarsi un presente in questo nuovo mondo di democratizzazione musicale. Si auto-produce i propri lavori che rende disponibili gratuitamente (e naturalmente con possibilità di donazione), spedisce cartoline hand-made, inforna biscotti e riesce a mantenere con i suoi numerosi follower un rapporto diretto e umano, oltre ad inventarsi mini-tour europei. Una chiara rappresentazione di come i musicisti possono muoversi nel disordine musicale datato 2012. Un esempio da seguire attentamente.

"My friends left me in their apartment in Üsküdar for a few days, alone with a talking cat and a piano. I‘d feed the cat in the morning and then play the piano 'til noon, having no idea how that instrument works but enough time to make errors and more errors until uncontrollable sounds turn into melodies. The balcony overlooks the Bosphorus. 
I have dinner watching ferries cross from Asia to Europe and back, hear seagulls screaming, unaware of continent borders. Back home, over there, in the West there are things waiting for me, unresolved stories, but I keep lingering over here, far away and out of reach from everything. 

Istanbul is the loudest city I know, the most restless one, crowded, big and dirty and unbearable, but I love it more fiercely than any other. (more)

Anche impegnandomi, non riesco a sfuggire al fascino di Entertainment for the Braindead. Armonizzazioni vocali che mi avvolgono con un nastro arcobaleno. Seconda serie delle cartoline provenienti dai viaggi dell'instancabile musicista berlinese. Questa volta siamo ad Istanbul e ci arriviamo molto lentamente, con l'andamento pesante e "carovanesco" di "Calm". Strade polverose e losche figure intente a spiare. Tende ammuffite, appiccicate a finestre di legno modellato dall'umidità di bollitori dimenticati. Una voce che è un leggero soffio di vento entrato per sbaglio all'interno di una cattedrale abbandonata. Poche persone inginocchiate ad aspettare ancora una risposta con lungimirante pazienza. Colgo i sapori di una preziosa solitudine, catturata con il tatto sensibile di un'artista e magicamente trasformata in musica con pochi strumenti essenziali. Tocchi sincopati di pianoforte che potrebbero ricordare alcuni lavori di Kate Bush in versione più acustica. Ma Entertainment for the Braindead ha gran personalità, talento e la capacità di trasformare in musica qualsiasi cosa le accada intorno.

"In the last few years I have travelled more than ever before in my life. Physically, in terms of seeing foreign countries, walking through wastelands, kissing new friends goodbye in distant airports, as well as mentally, just gathering new experiences and insights.. And sometimes I managed to record those journeys, let some of those moments curdle into sound and song. Those acoustic artefacts of different points in time and space now lie on my desk like postcards that I bought and lettered yet never sent. Now if I were to travel back in time to those points that were significant, where would I end up? What's written on those postcards that I'd find now that I forgot about? I'm not quite sure, but either way it's time to go and send them, one by one, until we have a collection that traces the steps on this journey. The trip starts on an island in the Baltic, summer 2010, will continue to spring in Turkey, move back home from there.. and end in Berlin as we move from past to present tense. It will contain songs about apocalypse played on water bottles and resonating flintstones, the very first attempts to play a piano, explorations of vocal music, discoveries of new instruments, songs about yearning for departure and songs about return. You will see, as each month from now until the end of the year, you will receive a bunch of mixed and mastered memories from me." Alcune release hanno il pregio di arricchire la mia cultura geografica e di portarmi a scoprire  alcuni luoghi finora a me sconosciuti. E' il caso di "Postcard #1: Songs for the Apocalypse"di E.F.T.B. Quattro tracce scritte e registrate nel 2010 a Hiddensee, un'isola tedesca nel Mar Baltico, località di villeggiatura molto amata dagli scrittori, luogo pacifico e interdetto alle automobili. Barche a remi e canti di gabbiani, la voce del silenzio che ti sussurra la sua beatitudine. Una chitarra acustica che racconta con semplice serenità il suo stato d'animo appagato. Melodie e armonizzazioni vocali che mi offrono sfocate visioni di esseri umani in ginocchio intenti a pregare e a sperare in un mondo in cui il suono delle monete e delle guerre economiche senza spari ed esplosioni siano solo un cattivo ricordo. "Hiddensee" è una leggera e salutare medicina contro lo stress quotidiano. A volte bastano quattro brani come questi per sentirsi meglio.

[aaahh014] Various Artists – Denmaaahhrk Compilation

"We went to Denmark for a week, rented a house there and invited all our artists. Most of them came and enjoyed a week full of jams, recordings and fun. The result is a wonderful compilation of 15 songs."


Un po' di tempo fa, aaahh records, stanca di muoversi esclusivamente nel web, ha avuto la buona idea di affittare una casa per una settimana in un bel posto in Danimarca, invitando gli artisti che nel corso di questi anni hanno offerto all'etichetta danese la loro musica.  E così, nel settembre 2011, dopo giorni di jam-session e registrazioni ne è uscita questa ottima raccolta intitolata "Denmaaahhrk Compilation". Un modo simpatico per riunire per la prima volta i musicisti appartenenti all'etichetta e ben documentato nei video presenti nella release page. Musicalmente la compilation ben rappresenta l'atmosfera da impro-jam trasmettendo a chi ascolta una sensazione di amicizia e spensieratezza. Spuntano gemme un po' ovunque, sin dall'iniziale "Ronald's House" fino alla confidenziale "Remnants". Si riconoscono subito le voci di Nicolas Falcon (eccellente in ogni sua interpretazione), Bryyn e Entertainment For The Braindead (splendidi insieme nella delicata "Get Out"), tre tra gli artisti di punta di aaahh records. Un valido esperimento che rispecchia fedelmente l'anima pura delle netlabels, non dominate dalla logica del profitto ma guidate dalla passione e dall'amore per la musica. La bandiera di Aaahh Records che viene issata al cielo (ripresa in un video), può rappresentare anche il resto delle netlabels mondiali (anche se non tutte possono vantare la qualità delle proposte offerte dall'etichetta danese). Un modo nuovo (neanche tanto, sono passati 20 anni dalle prime netlabels!)  per riappropriarsi della musica. Una casa, qualche strumento, un computer e il piacere di fare musica insieme. Potrebbe bastare solo questo.

[AER004] My First Trumpet - "Bene"

Ritorna sotto una nuova veste Aerotone, deliziosa netlabel tedesca che nella sua prima vita ci aveva consegnato alcuni piccoli gioielli musicali, dalla pluri-scaricata compilation del 2006 "[aer002] Soundtrack for your wedding", (più di 70.000 download su Internet Archive!) fino ad arrivare a squisiti artisti come Entertainment for the braindead o Cantaloop. In questa seconda vita Aeroton cambia approccio verso il mondo net-audio e così, dopo aver rilasciato dal 2005 al 2009  quasi 20 album in formato gratuito Creative Commons, ora ritorna con le proprie proposte a pagamento e con diritti riservati.
Si parte da prezzi relativamente bassi, ma l'importo da versare si può aumentare a proprio piacimento. Per ogni release seguirà anche una tiratura limitata in cd. L'unico neo è che bisogna seguire una procedura di iscrizione all'etichetta per poter effettuare il download. Netlabels crescono e cambiano. My First trumpet (Kevin Hamann,Amburgo) non è nuovo per Aerotone e questa è già la sua terza release. "Bene" è un album raffinato, con una cura dei suoni e dei particolari invidiabile. Le morbide ritmiche dei brani ad un attento ascolto possiedono una fine ricercatezza. In "Currly" si respira già il ritorno della primavera. Le tracce in generale sono strutturalmente semplici ma fitte di piccoli particolari che rendono l'ascolto particolarmente piacevole. Si avverte l'influenza di una certa scena tedesca (Notwist ,Tarwater e compagnia bella sono dietro l'angolo)  anche se My First Trumpet possiede un proprio stile e una propria personalità ben definiti. Chitarre acustiche malinconiche, leggeri cori usciti dalla penombra della camera e ritmiche flessuose caratterizzano l'intero album. Pregevoli gli incastri ritmici di "DroegE". Vale la pena spendere qualche spicciolo.
